Step by Step: The Benefits of Walking

The Benefits of Walking

Walking and Weight Loss

A benefit of walking includes weight loss along with watching your calorie intake. We all can exercise every day of the week, but if we eat more than our bodies need, the weight will not decrease. Many of us eat and snack due to stress. We reach for chips, sweets, or fast foods to ease stress and comfort. To lose weight, we need to take in fewer calories than our bodies burn. Can we lose weight by walking 30 minutes per day? Yes, we can if we watch our calorie intake and walk briskly for 30 or more minutes per day. One can lose 1-2 pounds per month by walking 30 minutes per day.

Sometimes it may be challenging to get in more than 3000-4000 steps in a day. If you work and sit most of the day, you have to be creative to enjoy the benefits of walking. Here are a few tips to include more steps in your day.  Walk around your office. Step away from your desk, gather a couple of co-workers and briskly walk the hallways. If possible, take the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator. Schedule workday walks. Lunch and breaks are perfect for getting in your steps for the day.

Find Time to Walk

Another tip to improve the number of steps per day is to walk to places like the grocery store or post office if they are a few blocks away. If you need company, invite family members to join you. The benefits of walking can become a family affair. Ask your spouse, mate, kids, or grandkids to walk with you.  If you have a dog, walk the dog twice a day and add up the steps.

  1. Great motivational article to benefit everyone regardless of age. I always tell people that walking is free and it uses the body’s natural ability to push and move forward. Also the heart and lungs get a workout as well. I feel that walking is therapeutic as it clears the head by getting the endorphins moving.
